Student Handbook
For students navigating school, friendships, pressure, and tough moments — and for the adults who support them.
School Is Hard. That Is Real.
School is not just academics. It is social navigation, identity formation, family pressure, peer comparison, and trying to figure out who you are — all at once. Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, excluded, or lost at school does not mean something is wrong with you. It means you are human.
“You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep going one day at a time.”
Bullying: What It Is and What to Do
Bullying is repeated, intentional behavior meant to hurt, humiliate, or control another person. It can be physical, verbal, social (exclusion, rumors), or online (cyberbullying). It is never the target’s fault.
- Tell a trusted adult at school — a counselor, teacher, or principal
- Document what is happening: dates, what was said or done, who witnessed it
- For cyberbullying: take screenshots before deleting; block the person; report to the platform
- Do not respond or retaliate — it usually escalates the situation
- You are not alone, and it is not your fault
- Don’t join in or laugh — bystander reactions affect what happens next
- Check in privately with the person being targeted afterward
- Report it to a trusted adult — this is not “snitching”; it is protecting someone
Mental Health at School
- Anxiety and depression are among the most common experiences for students — you are far from alone
- Many schools have counselors trained to help — ask how to make an appointment privately
- You can ask for academic accommodations for mental health conditions through a 504 plan or IEP
- Social media comparison is a documented contributor to poor mental health in students — what you see is not the full picture
- Sleep, movement, and time away from screens matter more than most people realize
Finding a Trusted Adult
A trusted adult is someone who listens without judging, keeps what you share private (within safety limits), and takes you seriously. This might be a parent, a teacher, a coach, a school counselor, a relative, or another adult in your life.
If you do not have a trusted adult in your life right now, trained counselors are available by phone and text:

- Crisis Text Line — text HOME to 741741
